Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have found that regular erections are important for long-term maintenance of erectile function. A simple way to prevent impotence is described in the journal Science.
Researchers found that increasing the frequency of erections leads to an increase in the number of fibroblasts that provide erections, and vice versa: a decrease in their frequency leads to a smaller number of these cells. Fibroblasts are connective tissue cells that are the most abundant cells in the male reproductive organs in mice and humans.
