Experiments using mice have shown that fibroblasts mediate erections by absorbing the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which causes blood vessels to dilate. How effective this process is depends on the number of fibroblasts.
Older mice had fewer fibroblasts in the penis, which was also reflected in reduced blood flow. The ability to achieve an erection also decreases with age in humans, which may be partly due to fewer fibroblasts. Therefore, the researchers believe that it may be possible to train the ability to induce an erection to counteract impotence.
